Shona’s Gift
by Ray Burton
Shona looked forward to giving Jesus a special gift on his birthday. But first, she had to make it.
Her mom suggested they go to the shops.
Shona was amazed at the number of men dressed in red suits. She wondered why people never really grew up and tried to make this red fat fellow more important than her friend Jesus.
As they walked into The Warehouse, Shona continued to express her disapproval of how people had made toys and food more important than the true meaning of Christmas. Her mom just smiled, believing it was better to cultivate her love for Jesus.
A stand caught Shona’s eye. It was full of broken and damaged toys with a sign saying, ‘Reduced to Clear’ A beaming smile came across her face as she pulled out a one-armed, ripped teddy bear. She also found a ripped pink cloth and said, “I’m ready.”
They paid and headed home.
Shona laid the bear on the table with the pink cloth then proceeded to cup them up.
The following day was Jesus’ birthday. She entered the lounge. “Happy Christmas,” said her mom.
“Will you accept Jesus’ present on his behalf?” Shona asked.
“I’d love to.”
“Good, then hold out your hands and close your eyes.” Her mother did so.
Shona laid her gift on her mom’s hands and said, “Okay, you can open them now.”
Her mother opened her eyes to find a heart shaped pink cushion. “It’s my heart for Jesus,” said Shona.
